Problem Note 63014: Using PROC CONTENTS or SAS® Explorer to list or view the column attributes of a data set might generate exception errors

Your SAS® log might display exception errors when you run the CONTENTS procedure on a data set. An example of the code that can cause this problem is shown here:
libname sampsio list;
proc contents data=sampsio.allsites;
run;
proc contents data=sampsio.allsites;
run;
The same data set is printed without errors. However, an error that is similar to the following appears in the SAS log:
ERROR: An exception has been encountered.

In SAS Explorer, if you right-click the data set and select View Columns, you might see similar errors in the log. In that scenario, the error indicates that the SAS task name is “[Variable Listing]” rather than “[CONTENTS]” or “[Submit].”
